{The Heidelberg Project: Artistic Expression}

What one individual considers art, the next person may find the furthest thing from true art.
I try to understand the true meaning behind every artists piece, and the feelings from which their design was born.

Every artist has a story. A prelude to who they are, and what roads they have traveled to get there.

The Heidelberg Project is an outdoor art project in DetroitMichigan. It was created in 1986 by artist Tyree Guyton and his grandfather Sam Mackey, as an outdoor art environment in the McDougall-Hunt neighborhood on the city's east side, just north of the city's historically African-American Black Bottom area.

When Tyree returned from serving in the Army, he saw his childhood neighborhood had deteriorated after the 1960's riots.
At first, the project consisted of his painting a series of houses on Detroit's Heidelberg Street with bright dots of many colors and attaching salvaged items to the houses. It was a constantly evolving work that transformed a hard-core inner-city neighborhood where people were afraid to walk, even in daytime, into one in which neighbors took pride and where visitors were many and welcomed.

The Heidelberg Project is recognized around the world as a demonstration of the power of creativity in creating hope and a bright vision for the future.

I embrace Tyree Guyton for his artistic expression, and I am honored to have been photographed in his "living art".
